I am curious about the slats in a platform bed. Is it sturdy enough to support just a mattress without the box spring? Does it affect the life of the mattress if there is no solid base?

This bed is a true platform bed and is designed so that you do not need to use a boxspring or foundation. It provides enough support for just a mattress as there are 14 solid plywood slats as well as a center support rail. This type of support system is usually fine for most mattress products. If you have a mattress already, you may want to check the warranty information to see if there is any specific information as to what type of support system the mattress must be placed on.

Does the mattress come with a box spring as well if I'm already buying the bed?

No, the mattress that appears on this listing does not come with a foundation. The bed is a platform bed and does not require a foundation. The queen size of the mattress on this listing with a foundation is an additional $230.00. Memory foam mattresses ship compressed and that allows the shipping costs to be much less than a traditional mattress. A foundation, however, must ship with a large carrier which is more expensive.
