Memory Foam Mattress Shopping Guide

Memory foam mattresses or visco-elastic mattresses have become popular in the last few years. Although they cost more compared to regular inner coil mattresses, they are more preferred because of their benefits. However, the raw materials used in manufacturing the product may pose health risks. It is always best to consult your doctor first before using products you are not familiar with to avoid health risks.

If you are planning to buy your own memory foam mattress, it’s best to know more about them so you will choose the right one.

There are different things to consider if you want to purchase a good-quality memory foam mattress: sensitivity to temperature, density, and thickness.

Not all memory foam memory mattresses are temperature-sensitive. However, most of them are. Memory foam mattresses tend to adjust their firmness level according to the temperature. If it is cold, the mattress becomes firmer, and if it is warm, it softens up and moulds itself to the shape of your body. To determine if it is temperature sensitive, you can test to see how soft the mattress becomes by laying on it.

Density is also a very essential factor when searching for the perfect memory foam mattress. If you are a heavy person, you would want to choose a memory foam mattress with a higher density rating. Memory foam densities ranging from 5.0 lb to 5.9 lb will offer firm support. Memory foam mattresses that have a density lower than 5.0 lb may be too soft and may not react to your body temperature as much and not fully support your body.

If you want to know the firmness of the mattress, you can look for the Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) rate. The ILD ratings scale is from 10-16. A higher ILD means a firmer mattress.

Thickness of the memory foam mattress topper layer also affects the comfort. If you have experienced uncomfortable sleeping on a thin-layered mattress, you should know how to choose a thicker mattress. The standard thickness ranges from 2 to 4 inches, but the ideal thickness is at least 3.5 inches. If it gets lower than this, it is most likely that you will not get comfortable body support. In choosing a comfortable memory mattress topper layer, you should consider softness and its tendency to sag in the middle.

When you are shopping for memory foam mattresses, always check for the warranty. The product may seem perfect for you at first, but then you might discover some abnormalities. The best thing is to ask for the warranty to make sure that you have something to go back to if the mattress isn’t satisfactory.
